Aggression

Aggression is a very positive and functional psychobiological driving force that has led, in large part,
to the survival of our species, which leads us on to realise our ambitions, dreams and aspirations in
life, and helps us to protect ourselves and others when the need arises.

However, when it is misused, aggression can violate the fundamental rights of others.  When this
happens it is clearly not a functional or desirable use of such energy and constitutes violence.
Violence includes verbal abuse, racial or sexual harassment and physical assault.

Everyone who works with the general public is at risk from violence.

Many care and support staff who work in potentially or actually violent surroundings, do not fully
understand the principles of appropriate response on all levels.  As a result staff have often felt
unable to respond at all, thus sustaining emotional trauma or physical injury.  On other occasions
staff have over-reacted and dealt with a situation inappropriately.

Untrained staff increase the risk of legal proceedings dramatically.

Legal proceedings following incidences of violence can be costly, time consuming and stressful for all
  those involved.

How can Project 5 help?

Project 5 provides specialist training for the caring professions.

The physical response techniques employed within the Project 5  system are always affected in a
peaceful, caring and non-harming way. The well being and dignity of all the individuals involved is
  maintained.

Dignified and empathic physical intervention techniques are used.

The Project 5 Peaceful Response training programme, first presented in 1976, was specially created
to meet the needs of those working in caring professions, it is unique in its approach and has served
as a model for many subsequent training packages.

Training comprises a series of inter-active role play exercises supported by short explanatory lectures
and group discussions. The object is to examine ways in which staff may cope with violence using
verbal and non-verbal communication skills, escape strategies and `hands on` guiding, releasing or
  holding techniques.

Project 5 training increases personal confidence and group morale.

Each Project 5 Peaceful Response course delivered in your geographic location is facilitated by
Project 5's principal Roger Sheldon who has thirty years experience in this field.  He will
be happy to discuss your specific needs and the background to any training that you wish to
provide for your staff in the strictest confidence.

Each course is unique and developed to meet the service provider's exact needs. It will also
compliment and support any policy statement and guidelines that may be in effect.  Project 5's
principal, Roger Sheldon achieves this, if necessary, by visiting each service provider personally to
discuss individual needs and aims.

Courses are specially created to meet your precise needs.

In a number of special instances, just a day's training input may be all that is required.  In regular
situations it is felt that the standard three day course would be more appropriate for those working
directly with the service users.

Project 5 has an in depth understanding of your needs.

Positive assistance provided in drawing up working guidelines.

Full back up pre-course information, explanatory course notes and official Project 5 attendance
  certificates are provided.

Roger Sheldon has been recognised by the leading authorities in the UK and has taught over 30,000
professionals since 1976.  He has developed a unique understanding of the management of aggression

and violence in social service and health care

If you need cost effective training in the management of violence delivered in a flexible and holistic
way to meet your exact requirements within the Project 5 framework, we will be happy to visit you
without obligation to discuss the options with you.
