Rather than completing anything - in Shinseido one will never be
finished.

The impermanence of being (1)
Apple blossom, virginal and balmy days,
The sword strikes...
Silent moonlight falls upon the sparkling snow,

The murmur of summer insects,
The soft and frivolous breeze,
Distant sheep bleating,
Oppressive, burning heat,
Aromatic vegetation.

The Macrocosmic microcosm
The Primeval Atom was not alone,
Beyond our understanding and reach lie others,
All time is a fragment of a still greater whole,
Beyond our understanding and reach.
All the Universe is a fragment of a still greater whole,
Beyond our understanding,
We are a fragment of that whole,
Beyond.....

Reflecting
Silent memories are no more,
Dust in a desolate wilderness,
Corroded steel and whitened bones,
Reminders of a bygone age.

SAYINGS FROM MY TEACHER
Selected by Shinsei (Roger Sheldon) On humility Some Westerners consider humility a matter of being without pride or self-assertion. If this definition were correct we could speak of anyone not deserving of respect as being humble, as long as he didn't have pride. Only those people who have accomplished something and are deserving of respect can be humble. The master possesses great pride in a form that appears like humility. He knows his tremendous accomplishment, yet never loses sight of his great short comings. The hard, soft law of our art applies even here: the master will talk with his newest student with sincerity and humility as long as the student's attitude is right. Should the student become demanding or sarcastic, the master will walk away silently. From Jon Alexander, my teacher. 1975

Existence
All things in this creation exist within you, There is no border between you and the closest things. And all things, from the highest to the lowest, In one atom are found all the elements of the earth, In one drop of water are found the secrets of all the endless oceans, You are all things, Fill your mind with gentle things, Remember always, the earth, the universe and all it contains can be reduced to a handful of dust held in the outstretched hand of a dying child. From Jon Alexander, my teacher. 1975.

Reflections Upon The Classical Kata
I see it now, today.
Again I see enlightenment.
A momentary step in enlightenment.
Which makes me embarrassed,
to recall words earlier said.
The lesson is so incredibly simple,
Yet so impossibly difficult,
How can I learn this lesson,
in a single human lifetime,
And then give my knowing
to others?
Understanding, love and oaring.
Yielding and fluidity,
Oneness with the Universe,
Touching without harming,
letting his aggression drain away.
When the forces don't permit,
Open the door for him to see,
By guided hands, the inevitable,
His momentum propelling him
into the nothingness of space.
A self given reward with my love

Shinseido: The transmutation of violence
Shinseido is the very antithesis of violence. The movements within the ancient forms represent a unique method of kinetic meditation that alleviates stress and leads to a more peaceful and calm way of living. As a system of self-defence, the movements of Shinseido are 'non-confrontational'. The practitioner yields to, or re-directs a violent approach, and by so doing is able to escape from, or neutralise that violence. "The softest thing in the universe

The Way
My clenched fist smashes down
and shatters not your skull
but my own illusions.
My fingertips pierce forward - not into your ribs
but spearing the dark silent space of eternity
for once just within reach
where nothing and everything meet.
I find that I try too hard
I deliver most power
when I am relaxed and my ch'i flows easily from the deep place in my belly
not when I strain with effort
the tensed lines of thirty years trying, show in my raised shoulders.
Lowering my hips
I am introduced to a new stability
sinking my centre into the ground
being stronger nearer the earth
not when I am taller (that fond illusion of short people!)
I never thought of standing shorter to get stronger.
I lengthen and broaden my stance
and extend my hands further from my body
I can attack with one step on opponent several feet away.
Do I dare to occupy, to command all this space,
finding my full presence in three dimensions.
From the quality of my shout I discover my mood tonight
a sure unfiltered guide
not manipulated by thought
to the moment state of my inner self.
When you attack me
see in your face not your aggression, but my own fears
mirrored in the light behind your eyes
reflected back for me to claim
In my minor injuries
I am forced to face my old emotional crippling
that I can be so easily dispirited
by blows that cause little pain and do no physical damage.
In the magic feeling of my body
after an evenings hard training
I know the solid beauty and ecstatic power of my flesh
and the triumph of spirit that knows it can, because it did
For an empty hand it's shifted an awful lot of realities for me.
By Sheila Rose, Shinsei's student. 31st December, 1983.

Whatever we think,
Whatever we say,
Whatever we change,
Whatever we believe,
We are still here, we still do what we do, and nothing changes.
We will still go back to what we were doing before.

Two beliefs of Shinsei sensei
To express the higher forms of your art one must have a clear mind and a clear heart, the balancing of the body is not enough, one must balance his mind and his soul. True power is not defeating someone else but conquering yourself.
Nineteen Sayings collected by my student Suzanne Stewart. Virtue is not left to stand alone. He who practices it will have. They must often change, who would be constant in happiness or wisdom. It is not possible for one to teach others who cannot teach his own family. The superior man is modest in his speech but exceeds in his actions. He who merely knows right principles is not equal to him who loves them. If you enjoy what you do, you'll never work another day in your life. The Master said, (the good man) does not grieve that other people do not recognise his merits. His only anxiety is lest he should fail to recognise theirs. He who learns but does not think, is lost He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger. If I am walking with two other men, each of them will serve as my teacher. I will pick out the good points of the one and imitate them, and the bad points of the other and correct them in myself If one learns but does not think, one will be bewildered. If one thinks but does not learn from others, one will be imperilled. In learning and straightway practising is there not pleasure also? Learning without thought is labour lost; thought without learning is perilous Of a gentleman who is frivolous none stand in awe, nor can his learning be sound. Study as if you were never to master it; as if in fear of losing it. Study without thought is vain: thought without study is dangerous. There may be men who act without understanding why. I do not. To listen much, pick out the good and follow it; to see much and ponder it: this comes next to understanding. To be fond of learning is near to wisdom. . When the mind was disciplined and expanded by study, the remarkable harmonies of nature would become plain. One has to fill oneself with knowledge like a vessel. Upon the knowledge gained, the indwelling truth would act like a yeast, forcing the mind to assume its original perfect shape. When we see men of a contrary character, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves. Suzanne Stewart. 24 February 2006 ......oooOooo......
Thirteen selected sayings from Buddha's Little Instruction Book. By Jack Cornfield. Victory creates hatred, defeat creates suffering. Those who are wise strive for neither victory nor defeat. If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete. The more fully we give our energy, the more it returns to us. The trouble is that you think you have time. Avoid the company of deluded people when you can. When you cannot, keep your own counsel. Learn to respond not, react. No matter how difficult the past , you can always begin again today. Neither fire nor wind, birth nor death can erase our good deeds. Fear is always an anticipation of what has not yet come. our fear and separation are great, but the truth of our connection is greater still. Forgiveness is primarily for our own sake, so that we no longer carry the burden of resentment. But to forgive does not mean we will allow injustice again. A day spent judging another is a painful day. A day spent judging yourself is a painful day. You don't have to believe your judgements; they're simply an old habit. Those who are awake live in a state of constant amazement. Karma means you don't get away with anything. Selected by Suzanne Stewart. 26 February 2006 ......oooOooo......
