A contemporary life-skill cum classical martial art
Learning the art of calm peacefulness through the Shorin Ryu maxim "Do not fight"
An eclectic approach to the management of violence on all levels, rooted in old classical practises and philosophy.

Shinseido Shorin Ryu is an eclectic life-skill art that was developed over a period of more than thirty years by Roger Sheldon who is chairman of the Okinawan Martial Arts Association and Chief Instructor of Shinseido Shorin Ryu Kyokai.

It took thirty years to hone Shinseido, and today it stands alone as a life-skill system second to none.  Roger's profession is consultant and trainer in the management of Challenging Behaviour, Aggression and Violence.  For many years he provided training for a wide range of professions including Police, Prison Services, the Caring professions and the like.  However, as his ideals led him more and more to a totally peaceful manner of addressing violence, he found a niche for

his methods within the Learning Disabilities and similar

fields.  It was in this area of endeavour that he was able to bring his aspirations to fruition.

Shinseido is one teacher's way of disseminating an old classical martial art, but in a way that makes it totally valid in our culture more that a century later.  The contemporary life-skill (called Project 5) is taught in conjunction with Shorin Ryu, the classical martial art and the whole forms a continuum of response from totally passive to totally destructive.  This falls very much into line with Roger's sense that everything in creation exists on a continuum with everything else.  It also falls into line with the old Shorin Ryu oath, "Do not fight".

Shinseido, by its very nature, embraces an understanding of the theory of aggression and violence, the philosophies of Shinsei and practical hands on skills.

Roger teaches his Shinseido at his training hall (Shinsei Dojo) at Riverhead in Kent UK.  Shinsei Dojo was established on 28th June 1974 as the Sevenoaks Za-Zen Karate: Zen Shin Ryu Dojo.  Roger's black belt students who have become teachers in their own right are required to know and understand the Shinseido system equally along with Shorin Ryu.  Roger says, "This is very  important to me because I want all our teachers to have a broad understanding of the nature of violence and its management.

It is irresponsible to be possessed of the skill  to kill or maim, but not have the confidence or ability deal with people peacefully, to walk away from conflict, to have the skill to 'talk-down' or, ultimately the ability to defend oneself 'reasonably' as statutory law of the land demands."

In reality, Shinseido and Shorin Ryu are the same thing but that's not an easy thing to understand at first.

Shinseido Shorin Ryu is a therapeutic art.  Its practise will change you as a person in a number of fundamental ways.  If you are shy and retiring it will make you confident and assured.  If you are brash and arrogant it will make you more humble and self aware.
